Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is performed on teeth when the pulp (nerve and blood vessels in the center of the tooth) of the tooth has died, an infection has started at the end of the root(apex), or if decay has extended into the pulp. When the nerve in the tooth dies it needs to be taken out and replaced with a filling material. The tooth is anesthetized and an access hole is made on the top of the tooth. With very small instruments the dead nerve and blood vessels are removed. The now hollow canal is sterilized and filled. The tooth is weaker after root canal therapy and a crown in usually recommended for that tooth.
